The standard homeowners policy has coverages for property that most homeowners have. If your home was wiped out by a tornado for example and you were sitting down with a claims adjuster he/she would not bat an eye if you said that you had some televisions and a lawn mower in the garage and some appliances, etc. Almost everyone who owns a house has such things. If you have some collection of things or some things that are way more valuable than the run of the mill household, then those things should be discussed and perhaps listed on the policy before you have a claim. In some cases there may be an extra charge. In other cases the insurance company may ask for an appraisal or a bill of sale. In all cases it is better to have that discussion before a tornado moves your genuine star wars collectibles collection to the bottom of Lake Michigan.
